Bakkhali in the 24 Parganas(S) district is 132 km from Calcutta on the east side of the Hooghly. It has a long sandy beach, an ideal getaway from the hustle and bustle of Calcutta.

The Race Course ground lies on the western side of the Victoria Memorial. It is regarded as one of the best race courses in India. It started off in 1819 organised by the Royal Turf Club. Apart from horse-races, this ground was also used for playing polo.
The horse-race starts in the month of July and continues till September. It starts again in November and concludes in March. The race is generally held on Saturdays. However, it is also held on important holidays and some special occasions.
Academy of Indian Coins & History is Established in 1997, a voluntary organisation dealing in ancient Indian coins and history. It is opened on weekdays from 11 am to 1 pm.
St. John’s Church is Located south to the B.B.D. Bag, St. John’s Church is one of the oldest churches of Kolkata.
Asiatic Society is Located at 1 Park Street, Kolkata 700016, this institution is a famous centre of Indology, Literature and Scientific Research. It was founded by Sir William Jones in 1784 with Warren Hastings as its first patron. Its library contains about 20000 volumes including about 8000 rare Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian and Hindi manuscripts.
Birla Academy of Art & Culture is A well maintained state gallery with exhibits depicting the artistic and cultural heritage of India and a permanent exhibition of Indian contemporary art. There are also archaeological specimens there. It is open from 4 pm to 8 pm.
Digha is 185 km south-east of Calcutta on the Bay of Bengal, is a 7 km long beach but if you are looking for a beach holiday then it is better to visit Bakkhali or Shankarpur nearby.
